JESUS SPOTTED ON THE BEACH

Walking along the beach in Del Mar, I spotted this wonderful orange striped umbrella.  I approached the lady sitting under the umbrella to ask her permission to take a photo on my iPhone.  I got closer, then closer, then was standing right beside her and she still didn't notice me, and NO, she wasn't sleeping.  So I politely said, "Excuse me".  I apparently startled her because she slapped her hand on her chest and blurted out "JESUS"!  I responded, "Oh no, it's just me, Paula".  Wide-eyed she says, "Jesus" again, still holding her chest and looking at me like she really was having a spiritual encounter.  Not knowing what to do I said, "I know him, but really, it's just me, Paula".  Then she relaxed and started laughing, we chatted and hence I have this photo instead of a black eye.  It was worth the risk, don't you think?

Disclaimer:  I am watching the morning national weather reports of snow or storms throughout the US today (FEB 25) as I am writing this, so I sincerely apologize for any preconceived taunting.  We have earthquakes and fires if that helps lessen the blow.

Being an artist is by nature a sedentary lifestyle.  I stepped on the scale last week.  I suspected it was broken last time I stepped on it, but now I'm sure of it.  I will walk more, get back into exercise and watch my calories.  I tried a spin class.  I walked into the dark room and was instantly intimidated.  Everyone looked all buff and in charge so I finally approached a group to ask who the instructor was.  The one sitting on the floor looks up and without speaking does this body language thing to non-verbally say "Dah".  I asked her to show me how to use the bike or any needed advise.  She instructed me how to adjust the seat and insert my feet in the basket thingies, then said, "If you feel like you're going to pass out, well...just suck it up".  I ended up in between two maniac women half my age who actually sped up during the short breaks.  I wasn't told what to do when the instructor yelled "Left".  "Left again".  I finally figured it out by watching the speed racers on either side of me.  I survived but cursed under my breath as I held on to the handrail with both hands going down because my rubber legs quit working.

Started back into BodyPump on Saturday.  Couldn't walk or raise my arms yesterday so I decided to count my calories instead of working out.  That was just as painful and a real eye opener.  I eat all the right foods, oat bran, plain greek yogurt, salmon, veggies.  However, after lunch I had already consumed 935 calories.  What???  I never payed attention to how even the calories in healthy foods add up.  More exercise and water; less w(h)ine.  Boo hoo.

  1. OH MY...I laughed and laughed. First off, 'Jesus'. When my kids started thinking this was an acceptable alternative to swearing I would always answer 'No. YOU can call me Mom!' Then exercising...I, too, decided to start. I went to the club and thought (there you go) that I was taking it easy. After all, I am 'healthy' right? The next day I went to visit a friend and she wanted to show my something upstairs. I had to 'crab up' sideways...so I am back to walking. Speed walking will be next..

    1. Mego, I remember in the 80's I decided to take an aerobics class. Woke up in the middle of the night and tried to get up to use the bathroom. My husband and I still laugh to tears when we remember that. I couldn't get out of or back into bed. We have learned a few things over the years. I like "crab up".

  2. Gorgeous photo. I just love those umbrellas!

I'm finally back into working out. I started jogging with my husband last year, I don't enjoy it, but it's good company and good exercise. Last November, I added Bootcamp. I really love it. I'm not good at monotony, but the instructor is wonderful, changes things up constantly, & is very helpful. I can modify when needed. I'm not a morning person, but it's great to be finished working out by 7am.

    Good luck!

    1. Laura, the word Bootcamp is scary enough! Right now I'm just trying to perfect monotony.

  3. Beautiful photo! You should paint it. I love your reaction to her exclamation! I thought you were going to say that you walked up to "her" and found out she was a "him" that had long hair like Jesus. hahaha

You are so brave to go to a spinning class all by yourself! Good for you! Maybe another class with a nicer teacher would be good - although from stories I've heard your experience sounds about normal. ;) I joined weight watchers last October and am down 31 lbs - still have a LOT to go but it is a constant struggle and balance, that is for sure.

    1. Yes, I was brave to go by myself Lisa, but not enough to go back yet. BTW; I want to thank for your constant encouragement. xoxo

  4. Oh honey! The gym, and counting calories. Bummer. I promise that if you keep going, and pace yourself you will be very happy that you did. I decided to get a trainer, and I work out with him twice a week. He helps me understand why certain things are painful, shows me how to use all the machines so that when I go to the gym by myself, I feel more confidant. Basically it took over a year to feel like I really belong there, but you will get stronger and stronger and feel better too. Calories: if you eat a lot of fiber, like veggies, you will be fuller. Drink a big glass of water before every meal, take food with you if you are going shopping all day or something like that, and dont eat late at night. Also, don't drink during the week if you are trying to shed pounds, only on the weekends. In a few weeks you will already feel leaner and stronger :) Hope you don't mind the unsolicited advice.

    1. I do all the food stuff ad nauseam, but you confirm that I need more water and less wine. Thanks. I did have a trainer awhile back and might do it again once I am sure I won't pass out or puke.
